Titre : Performance Evaluation and Improvement of Congestion Control of the Constrained Application Protocol for the Internet-of-Things

Résumé : We performed CoAP analysis using Bernoulli Model for losses, Simple Gilbert and Gilbert-Elliot. Started with the simple model to understand the functionality of the protocol and scaled up until we ended up with the general model to compute different performance metrics. We found different aspects, one of which paved the path to the second contribution – RTO optimization. We faced many challenges such as different trade-offs between performance metrics and the need to keep the algorithm simple as much as possible so that it compiles in constrained devices. The final part is congestion counteraction. According to our analysis, a better approach is to know how much to wait before sending a new packet. This can be accomplished by estimating the bandwidth. We developed our own python simulator and tested the algorithms using different network scenarios. Our analysis show better results in estimating RTO and also shows that rate-based approach outperforms the backoff-based approach.
