Resumé: Context : Sensor networks embedded on the human body, known as Body Area Networks (BANs), offer a great potential in terms of real time patient’s health monitoring. Taking into account the fact that the most of European countries are experiencing an ageing of their population, this new generation of communication networks will improve considerably patient’s comfort as well as decreasing the medical cost. In addition, in the next future, BANs will also be a key feature of a more general concept : the “augmented human”. The use of wireless technology to interconnect sensors, either in Body or On Body, enables practical and seamless means to monitor connected peoples but reveals many challenges one should cope with. From an electromagnetic point of view, the human body and its surrounding environment represent a complex propagation medium for BANs. Consequently, the forthcoming development of such networks is very challenging in terms of communication and in terms of privacy because of the nature of the transmitted data. So it is necessary to develop a new conceptual approach for the future BAN engineering. Topic : The PhD candidate will work on on-body BANs for medical applications. The goal is to design dedicated antennas that will remain efficient when located on the human body surface. This is important to ensure the human safety by limiting its exposure to electromagnetic waves as well as to decrease the energy consumption of sensors. Furthermore, the designed antennas should exhibit some remarkable properties such that radiated waves will be confined to the human body area. In fact, data collected by the different sensors are highly personal (because related to health), and one should think a proper way to secure them. Confining the wireless signals about the human is a promising solution that can take benefit from new propagating and/or radiating surface wave structures.
