Resumé: This doctoral project focuses on the study of Ultra-Dense Distributed Antenna Systems (UD-DAS) and Heterogeneous UD-DAS for next generation wireless communication systems. It aims to provide insights and fundamental understanding of critical, unknown aspects of this complex scenario and it takes advantage from them to propose practical and efficient criteria and algorithms for practical design and implementation of ultra-dense networks. More specifically, it will study two main issues. In the first phase, the project analyses the fundamental limits of the system in terms of spectral and energy efficiency. In a second phase, the candidate designs scalable optimum or nearly optimum resource allocation algorithms for UD-DAS and Heterogeneous UD-DAS. Special attention will be paid to the special case of cell-free DAS.
