Resumé: Botnets, collections of compromised computers, are one of the most malicious threats of Internet. They are used to perform di erent types of attacks, such as web scraping, which is the systematic retrieval of valuable content from large web sites. This activity causes signi cant business losses to the owners of these web sites. Countermeasures exist but are costly and e ective only for small amounts of time. Indeed, the attackers continuously adapt their techniques to circumvent the protections put in place. As a result, this is a never ending cat and mouse game between the defenders and the bots. Unfortunately, the bots have the upper hand. Instead of pursuing yet another technical detection and mitigation approach, the goal of this thesis is to apprehend the real causes of the problems, i.e. those who purchase the services of these bots. By analysing and understanding the ecosystems that use these bots and fund them, our hope is to nd ways to defeat the end users, rather than the intermediary bots. The partnership with a major industrial player, victim of these attacks, willl enable us to have access to real world data, in large quantities. It will also make it possible to bene t from the operational experience of the people securing these sites on a daily basis. Last but not least, it will enable us to experiment with various strategies and assess their e-ectiveness.
