Resumé: Communications have moved away from point-to-point models to increasingly heterogeneous and computation-oriented networked models. To provide robustness to degradation of service, and effective and reliable networked communications, with consideration of the physical layer, it is required to have an understanding of the performance limits for reliable communications in networked environments. To that end, the focus of this thesis is on the fundamental limits of computing, more specifically, on developing distributed source coding that can exploit the compressibility limits of computation tasks over communication networks, via accounting for the practical concerns pertaining to the energy efficiency, resource (storage and power), and deadline. To tackle the emerging challenges in the next generation of computing systems, this thesis will also concentrate on devising techniques and algorithms for task-oriented communication and learning. Our objective is to provide parsimonious representations tailored to the specifics of the tasks
